Swedish greco-roman wrestler Ara Abrahamian (who is actually an Armenian naturalized Swedish) became infuriated with the referees in his semifinal match, in the 84 kg category.
He lost and this sport has no bronze medal contest, all losing semifinalists being automatically awarded the bronze medal. To protest against the alleged "injustice", he attended the medal ceremony and, once it was over, during the "victory walk", he decided to blow the "olympic spirit" to high heavens, removed his bronze medal and left it on the competition mat, abandoning it there, in front of the olympic podium. I suppose he had some sort of sense of entitlement, having been the silver medallist (that is, the Olympic runner-up) in the previous Olympics, in Athens... Regretful, pittiful and downright ridiculous, if you ask me. He should be at least suspended by his federation, for embarrasing his country and his sport before the entire world. What a scene. |

The International Olympic Committee took away his bronze medal due to a violating the spirit of a fair play. I think that was only right thing to do.

Also, I'm not a big fan of the Olympics, and I know that other countries have had some screw jobs that favored the Chinese, but thankfully they've shown a lot more class than this baby.

my comment on this is...well first of all, I'm from Croatia and we know how it's like when referees screw you over big time! they do that to us all the time. it's because we are small country and not very influenced one like Germany, U.S., China, Russia etc. but the thing is -
The Olympics, man! it's the biggest sports event on the planet. You represent your country infront of the entire world. and to act like that?!? to throw a medal...Embarrasing, stupid and unprofesional! but mostly just stupid. |
